Career direction is like a road we travel, it’s filled with bumps and signals and takes many turns. And it’s very important on which path to be decide to optimistically reach to the target destination. Similarly people get opportunity to opt for career or creates opportunity for the same. Now as simple common tendency, like one explores other routes with a parameters, person needs to explore the career path with all the various parameters.

Let’s get to the example like buying clothes, one decides to select ethnic wear or casual wear or active wear based on occasion, existing collection, color, design, future use, pricing and many more parameters. Well similarly many of us neglects such parameters of career path either by not being aware of it or dreaded to talk on it.

Well there is nothing which should stop one from being aware of what you seek for your future, and especially the more information data you collect more informed decision would be taken as result. Seeking right information for the career path over various webpages, books or some person could be the type of ways to get information about the career path.

Selecting right path can boost career peak or may break down the acceleration of growth, and hence it’s wise to choose what to opt for. Let’s begin exploring parameters:

(1) Interested Skillset

First topic to explore is the interested skillset, in case if you are new to technology then you may wish to develop skillset which interest you. Hence overall it’s about utilizing the skills where you enjoy to work. This way you will be able to innovate and understand any complex challenges coming your way in to the future.

(2) Market Impact and scope

Here comes another interesting topic, directly or indirectly one does contributes on a product, i.e. if someone is simply doing data entry job to enter product details, it might be inheriting to various products as e-commerce platforms, general surveys and forms etc. On the other hand some might be contributing on writing a code in C language which could be directly consumed in product as real-time OS, edge devices etc

(3) Lifetime of Product

Life time of Product should be measured as after the first in-use how much period of time users are consuming product. Other parameters also to consider is maintenance support and market demand across the lifespan of product. i.e. Nowadays Every half a year we get to see new mobile device and especially if we come back after few years there would be dramatically improvement and changes would be observed. In general majority of people change the product after 3 to 4 years and that would be the average lifetime of the said product.

Well if we also consider the maintenance support or enhancement demand in life cycle, there are laptop devices which allows some modification and upgrades along the lifespan, i.e. upgrade of storage, memory, components like keyboard, display etc. One good thing one should also notice that how much warranty period and support period is covered for the product. whether it is a year, couple of years, five years or ten years.

(4) Contribution of work in Product

After you realize about the product, it’s time to jump to the critical portion to know that what is the average percentage contribution of work done for product. This could be done by finding and listing out all the components and breakdown it’s values. i.e. If laptop is one where work contribution is being done, then various breakdown of items are be like — hardware components, firmware, operating system, user level security (if any) and other applications. Each of these components also can be divided in to sub component further such as hardware component — processor, motherboard, graphics card (onboard, discrete), memory, storage (SATA, NVMe), connectivity (Ethernet, Wi-Fi), USB, Thunderbolt, Display, Camera and many more. each component consists of its own research and development and keeps falling in to many more sub components as one wish to classify, but as in general out of the all components listed, one must prepare what is contribution weightage and percentage impact on overall product research and development.

Of course these are not only parameters, there are many more parameters for individuals such as scope of the work, future expectation, learnings, adaptation of market demands, reuse of technology, environment impact etc. One can consider as many as parameter affects the most. It’s like a simple polynomial formula with weights multiplying on every parameter. Sometimes some parameter doesn’t matter or it could be neglected compared to others. But of course that would be individuals choice only!
